Hi Steve — Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Yes, there are communities and they create standards. On that we can agree.
Here’s the thing. We live in a larger community of the United States and a broader communities that are world-wide like science, policy, trade, etc. For those broader communities, we have to agree on certain facts. There can’t be, for example, a community interpretation of the metric system. All these communities that the internet enabled are amazing and beautiful, but we all have to live together in a broader community IRL.
The internet is fundamentally broken because it lacks an accountability protocol that works across platforms. Facebook, Google, etc will all implement various accountability fixes to deal with fake news and fake facts. We need a system that works everywhere because information wants to be free and isn’t going to live just on one platform.
